Now a day’s Psychology is a great subject to make a career. Because there are many fields in this subject .One can choose the best field of his or her interest. So if you are thinking to make a career in psychology, hopefully this post is going to help you to make the best choice.

There are many fields of psychology. And there are many difference between them, so one field is different from others. Most importantly there is no fixed way of classifying them. Here I am talking about some common and popular types. So let’s get started.

Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychology is one of the most popular fields of psychology. It works mainly with mental illness and many other problems like adaptation, adjustment, disability and personal development also.

Clinical psychologist mainly used psychological assessment and psychotherapy to practice. They try to interact with patients through observation, interviews and tests before diagnosis and make a plan to deal with the symptoms of a mental illness.

They also try to concentrates on the behavioral, intellectual emotional, psychological and biological aspects of human life across his cultures and socioeconomic levels.

Behavioral Psychology

Behavioral psychology works with people and tries to find out how habits form in people and what role mind play in the physical response. Behavioral psychologists try to find out the connection between mind and subsequent behaviors.

They try to predict how people will behave in a particular situation by understanding behaviors. Behavioral psychologists counsel, diagnosis and treat people who has a behavior disorder.

 Abnormal Psychology                        

Abnormal psychology is one of the fields of psychology which focuses unusual patterns of thought, emotion behavior often in clinical context. This field covers many disorders like depression, OCD, personality disorders, schizophrenia etc.

In abnormal psychology, they use a plan to assess a person which is known as 4 Ds, they are deviance, distress, dysfunction and danger. This field tries to study whether unusual behavior is from a biological (nature) or learned through experience (nurture).

Cognitive Psychology

This field is now most popular among people. Cognitive psychologists try to find out how people think and obtain process and store information in the brain. Cognitive psychology conducts research to understand mental processes like memory, learning, problem solving etc.  

 Developmental Psychology

Developmental psychology is mainly works with human growth and development across the life. It helped us to understand how people change over their ages psychologically, socially, biologically.

Developmental psychologists use in-depth, twin studies, cross-sectional, longitudinal studies to find out about developmental changes. They also try to find out the causes behind delay in development.                  

Personality Psychology

This field is a branch of psychology which studies personality and try to find out how personality develops and how it influences people to think and behave differently.

Personality means individual differences in the patterns of thinking, behaving and feelings. Psychologists assess, diagnose and treat people who have personality disorders.

Experimental Psychology

Experimental psychology uses scientific methods to conduct research about brain and behavior. It uses some methods like experiment, case studies, correlational studies and naturalistic observation.

They conduct research on either human or animals. They try to find out basic psychological processes like attention, perception and reasoning.

Social Psychology

Social psychology is the field of psychology which study how social context influence individuals behaviors and personalities. Psychologists try to help understanding people attitudes, willingness to form a group and social decision making.

They try to conduct research on prejudice, rumors, discrimination, stereotypes, groups and many other topics.

Educational Psychology

Educational psychology study how people learn. It tries to find out learning methods and information processing and absorbing in the brain. Educational psychologists study motivation, creativity, and learning and try to create some tests to make education systems better.

School Psychology

School psychology mainly works with school related issues. This field tries to work with students, teachers and parents to create a safe and healthy school environment. School psychologists focus on social, behavioral and academic factors to find best situation for students.

They mainly work in elementary and secondary schools but also in university and private clinics.

Industrial- Organizational Psychology

This fields also known as I/O psychology. Industrial- Organizational psychologists study how people behave in the industry or organization. They conduct research to understand workplace situation and also develop plan for performance and work-life balance for the employees.

Sport Psychology

Sport psychology mainly works with how psychology influences sports. Psychologists try to help athletes achieve optimal performance. Some sport psychologists even work with professional athletes and coaches and help them to improve performance.

Forensic Psychology

This field works with legal system. Psychologists apply psychology to criminal investigation and legal work. They also try to find out the psychological factors which can influence a case and present them to court.

Health Psychology

Health psychology study how and why people get sick. Psychologists try to help people understand that a choice can have a positive impact on their health. They study how social context, biology and behavior influence illness and health.

This field is also called medical psychology or behavioral psychology.

Biopsychology

This field is also called behavioral neuroscience, psychobiology or physiological psychology. Psychologists try to find out how brain diseases and brain injuries have impact on human behavior.

This field shows interest on how neurons, brain, nervous system influence behaviors, thoughts and feelings.
